Director, Rehabilitation Research and Development Service
Department of Veterans Affairs
Washington, DC, United States
Patricia A. Dorn, PhD, serves as Executive Director of the Rehabilitation Research Development and Translation (RRDT) Program in the Department of Veterans Affairs. In this role Dr. Dorn is engaged in and responsible for all aspects and actions of RRDT, which encompasses the diverse rehabilitation needs of Veterans. The Rehabilitation Research Mission aims to maximize Veterans’ functional independence, quality of life, and participation in their lives and community across the lifespan. Grounded in the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health framework, rehabilitation research, and development recognizes a person's level of functioning as a dynamic interaction between the Veteran’s health conditions, environmental factors, and personal attributes. Consistent with this framework, RRDT study endpoints include measures of functioning at the level of the Veteran (or animal in pre-clinical studies) and in social and environmental contexts. Important themes for rehabilitation research include primary and secondary prevention, improvement, restoration, and replacement of lost or deteriorating function (e.g., physical, behavioral, mental, sensory, and social).
Dr. Dorn received degrees in speech and hearing sciences from Purdue University (PhD), The Ohio State University (MA) and Michigan State University (BA). She completed an audiology internship at Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse and a post-doc at Boys Town National Research Hospital (BTNRH). Prior to joining VA she was a research scientist at BTNRH. Dr. Dorn has taught courses in hearing science/audiology, trained and supervised audiology students, as well as provided audiology clinical services to persons of all ages.
Dr. Dorn is passionate about Rehabilitation, Research, and the positive effects it can bring to Veterans.
