Dr. Benedict (Ben( Kolber serves as an Associate Professor and Director of the Systems and Cellular Neuroscience PhD Program in the Department of Neuroscience in the School of Behavior and Brain Sciences at The University of Texas at Dallas. He also serves as the co-Director of the Maximizing Access for Research Careers (MARC) undergraduate research program. Dr. Kolber came to UT Dallas in 2020 after starting his faculty career at Duquesne University (Pittsburgh, PA) in 2011. In Pittsburgh, Dr. Kolber was affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh Center for Pain Research. Kolber received his PhD in neuroscience from Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. Kolber has over 20 years of experience doing neuroscience research.
Kolber's research interests focus on comorbidities in chronic pain. He is interested in developing both pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies as well as understanding the underlying mechanisms of chronic pain. Basic science studies focus on the amygdala, an important central nervous node for emotional regulation and pain. Clinical translational studies focus on utilizing mindfulness meditation and exercise to treat chronic musculoskeletal pain. Kolber is passionate about trainee mentoring and developing the next generation of responsible and rigorous scientists. Dr. Kolber also has extensive experience teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. His teaching interests focus on teaching neuroscience, endocrinology, physiology, and utilizing innovative teaching techniques in the classroom.
