The Impact of Sleep Quality on Mobility in Adults: A Scoping Review

Objective(s): Sleep is crucial for optimal health, influencing both physical and cognitive functions. Despite its importance, inadequate sleep is a common issue among adults, potentially having a negative influence on their mobility and daily activities. Therefore, we are performing a scoping review to answer the question: “How does sleep impact mobility in adults?” This review defines mobility using the "Activities" domain of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF).

Data Sources: This scoping review follows the PRISMA-ScR guidelines and the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Manual for Evidence Synthesis for scoping reviews and is being conducted based on the protocol registered in Open Science Forum https://doi.org/10.17605/OSF.IO/D9E5K. A comprehensive search was completed in January 2024 in databases Ovid Medline, Web of Science, CINAHL, and Google Scholar by a biomedical librarian.

Study Selection: Citations generated from searches were exported to EndNote 21 and then to Covidence software for screening. Based on the predefined eligibility criteria, two reviewers independently screened 5532 titles and abstracts. A third reviewer resolved discrepancies in the title/abstract screening, and 551 articles are included in full-text review. Six reviewers are currently screening the full-text articles, and a third reviewer is resolving conflicts. Studies are included in this scoping review if they utilize study designs such as cross-sectional, longitudinal, cohort, or retrospective that can address the research question. Additionally, studies must assess sleep and mobility, include original data, and provide statistical analysis linking sleep assessments to mobility outcomes.

Data Extraction: The standardized data extraction table will include details on study identification, participant characteristics, study setting and methodology, sleep outcome(s), mobility outcome(s), and main results of how sleep impacts mobility. A primary reviewer will extract data from included articles using the standardized data extraction table, a secondary reviewer will review the data extraction for accuracy and completeness, and a third reviewer will resolve discrepancies. Two reviewers will critically appraise each included article using JBI critical appraisal tools, and a third reviewer will resolve discrepancies.

Data Synthesis: Descriptive analysis will be used to summarize the articles, the mobility and sleep outcome measures used, main results, and key findings across articles.

Conclusions: This systematic review will summarize the current state of the literature on how sleep impacts mobility in adults. It is anticipated that the findings will enhance our understanding of how sleep impacts mobility and the role of sleep as a target intervention to improve mobility.
