Self-management strategies for the management of Non-specific Chronic Low Back Pain (NS-CLBP) are important to reduce healthcare cost and unnecessary visits with healthcare providers. Self-management strategies are also essential to provide individualized care aimed at changing behavior to improve the patient’s perception of their condition. Effective self-management of NS-CLBP encompasses a range of patient-centered strategies aimed at educating and empowering individuals to take a more active role in their own care to prevent reoccurring episodes of NS-CLBP and to improve overall health. This symposium aims to share the current evidence-based research on interventions to improve the clinician’s ability to develop, deliver, and evaluate whole person-centered self-management plans for people living with NS-CLBP. The presenters will also share screening tools for psychosocial factors that can help guide specific treatment strategies to minimize recurrence and exacerbation of a person’s NS-CLBP episodes during the course of their self-management journey.

Learning Objectives:

• Upon completion, participants will be able to define non-specific chronic low back pain (NS-CLBP) and discuss reasons for encouraging people living with NS-CLBP to embrace the concept of self-management.
• Upon completion, participants will be able to identify the key components of a self-management plan for people living with NS-CLBP according to evidenced-based practices.
• Upon completion, participants will be able to identify and discuss a variety of treatment strategies that will integrate cognition with movement and include psychological aspects of the patient’s condition to better deliver comprehensive biopsychosocial self-management care.
• Upon completion, participants will be able to identify screening tools for psychosocial factors that can help guide specific treatment strategies to minimize recurrence and exacerbation of a person’s NS-CLBP episodes.
• Upon completion, participants will be able to define non-specific chronic low back pain (NS-CLBP) and discuss reasons for encouraging people living with NS-CLBP to embrace the concept of self-management.
