Sleep Management in Mild Traumatic Brain Injury 9575

Individuals with prolonged recovery following mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) experience physical, cognitive, emotional, and sleep dysfunction contributing to reduced participation in occupational and life roles and lower quality of life. Clinical management can be challenging due to the complexity of symptoms and underlying pathophysiology, biopsychosocial factors, and external barriers. This presentation will focus on reviewing sleep disruption in the setting of mTBI. Evidence indicates that sleep disruption can occur in up to 27-72% of individuals depending on TBI severity. Sleep disruption can range from hypersomnia to insomnia and should be differentiated from daytime fatigue. Understanding sleep and treating sleep disorders can be an area of practice that is less familiar to some clinicians, which can thereby limit education and supportive treatment provided to a patient. Through review of the evidence and case descriptions sleep management will be discussed from the lens of psychology, physical therapy, and occupational therapy.
