Dr. Erwin van Wegen is associate professor at the department of Rehabilitation Medicine, AmsterdamUMC, location VUmc. He is (co-)responsible for strategy and policy with regard to the scientific research in the neuro-unit of the department. Together with the other research staff, he initiates new research projects and supervises PhD students and students in their research. His research over the years has focused on the coordination of locomotion, standing balance, upper limb movement in the context of rehabilitation and recovery of motor function in movement disorders, specifically in Parkinson’s Disease (PD), stroke, MS and the elderly.
His projects are aimed at understanding early prognosis and longitudinal change in neuroplasticity and functional recovery, development of rehabilitation technology, e-health and self-management and exercise in patients with stroke, Parkinson’s disease and MS. Dr. van Wegen is guest lecturer at Faculty of Behavioral and Movement Sciences, boardmember of the Dutch Society for Neurorehabilitation and Director for Program Rehabilitation and Development and of the Amsterdam Movement Sciences Research Institute (http://www.amsterdamresearch.org) (2017-present).
